FOLLOWERS      Luke 5:27-32

Last week we talked about the importance of friends and making friends with sinners/lost folk.  Here is Jesus reaching out to sinner like us.

Jesus is calling a lost, criminal sinner to FOLLOW HIM!

Do you Follow Jesus?  Not in Social Media – in REAL LIFE?

  • Followers are:
    • Real People WITH Real Problems
      • Sinners in need of REPENTANCE
        • We need to REPENT
        • We need NEW LIFE – WITH HIM
      • This is why Jesus calls us
        • We are ALL sinners in need of repentance – CHANGE OF DIRECTION
      • Followers are called by God
        • If man calls you follow man and reap man’s reward
        • If God calls you FOLLOW GOD and reap God’s Reward
      • Followers RESPOND to God’s Call
        • Rise and follow Him
        • Here I am, send me
        • They do not ignore God’s Call
        • They do not say, “Wait until a better time”
        • They Followed – Not by FORCE but by CHOICE
        • You CANNOT stay where you are and FOLLOW CHRIST
      • Followers CELEBRATE God’s Call
        • Levi had a great feast
        • Praise and Worship
        • They were having a PARTY – They were EXCITED
      • Followers SEEK TO INTRODUCE others to the One who called them
        • Levi invited a LARGE COMPANY of Tax Collectors and others
          • A WHOLE HERD of sinners invited to meet Jesus
          • We know the Temple elite were there as well
            • Free meal – even if a sinner is cooking
            • Hypocrites
          • Are you a FOLLOWER of Christ? = CHRISTIAN

Luke 5:27-32  “After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.”   And leaving everything, he rose and followed him.  And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”  And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Those who THINK they are righteous will not answer God’s call to repentance because they do not understand their need for God or for REPENTANCE.

They believe they have it all figured out

They have a good “bead” on things

THEY ARE WRONG

When you decide to follow Jesus others will complain/grumble

Surely not that person!    Not him!!

Jesus saw something in Levi that even Levi did not see:  A heart in need of salvation and a heart to serve.

Jesus was NOT distracted by who Levi WAS – He knew who Levi COULD BE with Him.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to NOT EAT with sinners!  Because you are there and you are a sinner.  Even eating a TV dinner by yourself means you are eating with sinners

Maybe the reason Jesus called a sinful Tax Collector is because he knew he was a sinful tax collector and not one of the TEMPLE ELITE
