July 8, 2018      Luke 23:44 – 56    Living Realistic

  • Noon time: Darkness until 3 PM
    • The sin of all time FOCUSED on one place and time
  • Curtain of the Temple torn in two
    • No more separation
  • Jesus dies
    • Calling out to His Father
  • Centurion becomes a believer
    • At least partially “This was an innocent man”
  • Crowds left – sad
  • Only a few of those closest to Jesus remained
  • A believer named Joseph received permission to deal respectfully with the human remains of Jesus
    • Took Him to a borrowed, unused Tomb – never seen death
  • Everyone left
    • Sabbath quiet settled over the land
  1. Many came to Jesus when it was all about them
    1. They stayed as long as they got what they wanted
    2. They stayed as long as there was little or no controversy
    3. They stayed as long as staying was easy
      1. They like getting FREE STUFF
      2. They liked being cared for and supported
    4. Most left when it became all about Him
      1. It was hard to stay
      2. Jesus was in trouble with the Temple
      3. Jesus was in trouble with the government
      4. It seemed like Jesus was in trouble with the whole world
    5. Even fewer remained when it became about SERVING Him
      1. Talking to people in power about taking care of His body
      2. Taking Him down from the cross
      3. Carrying Him to the borrowed Tomb
      4. Preparing the spices and burial traditions for Sunday
        1. When there was work to do for Jesus most left
      5. Everyone left when it became about Him being dead and buried.
        1. He was gone
        2. In a tomb … buried in a hole

Life is always changing

Sometimes life is stable and comfortable

Sometimes life is like a rabid skunk;  you never know where it is going or what it is doing; all you know is that it stinks.  STAY CLOSE TO JESUS!

We USE these life ISSUES as EXCUSES for leaving Jesus!

 Everyone has bad days.

Everyone has good days

Everyone experiences tragedy and fear

JESUS makes the difference!

We think that we can somehow live our life OUR way and STILL remain in the CENTER OF GOD’S WILL and enjoy ALL that He has prepared for us.

It is unrealistic to expect to live in peace and joy when you will not remain in Christ

It is unrealistic to expect to live in Holy provision when you will not remain in Christ

It is unrealistic to expect to live in freedom when you will not remain in Christ.

It is unrealistic to expect to walk in full grace when you will not Remain in Christ

It is unrealistic to expect to walk in love when you will not remain in Christ

It is unrealistic to expect to walk in forgiveness when you will not remain in Christ

The ONLY constant, unchanging ROCK you can depend on is Jesus Christ.  Even death did not keep Him from loving YOU.

Stay with Christ THROUGH IT ALL!  He will Carry you through all of life’s issues and into Heaven’s arms.

Repent – He is always close

The truth is that EACH OF US is as close to Jesus as WE CHOOSE to be…..HOW CLOSE ARE YOU?

March 11th, 2018

Luke 22:31-34 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to have all of you, to sift you like wheat. [satan wants to “sift” all believers]  But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, [Jesus is on your side – HE is interceding on your behalf] that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, [You will fail sometimes.  Sometimes small, sometimes big  REPENT]  strengthen and build up your brothers.” [Once you experience the restoration only God can bring TELL OTHERS!  Strengthen yourself…your faith…encourage others.  Build into their lives]  Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” [Reality:  Peter had much to learn.  Peter was prideful.  His words said one thing, his actions would speak something different]  But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. [that is never good.  “Let me tell you something”] The rooster will not crow tomorrow morning until you have denied three times that you even know me.”  NLT [Peter, you are going to blow it so bad, you can’t even fathom the explosion of FAIL]

Faith is no crutch

Living your life for God is tough at times

  • The world is against you
  • Satan is against you
  • Sometimes it is your family and friends that are against you
  • You are against you

Simon Peter was full of pride and gravitas when things were going well for them and Jesus.  He could not see any possibility of failure.  Everyone was praising his “Boss” Jesus, they were widely accepted and everything seemed to be turning up roses.

Jesus let him know that he was about to learn the lesson of Proverbs 11:2 “Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” NLT

The reality is that when we think we have it all figured out and we can do anything, for God or for ourselves, we will soon find out just HOW MUCH WE HAVE TO LEARN.

Faith is not lived by the successes or failures we see in the world

Faith is lived ABOVE the mess of this life

Faith is lived for God, not ourselves or others

Faith takes work – it isn’t easy
Faith is easy to say, easy to fake BUT hard to live

It is easier to “LIVE IN” a faith than to truly “LIVE BY” Faith in God.

We should come to Jesus with “the faith of a child”   Matt 19:14

Simple, pure and complete

But we are to grow up and build a mature faith that is able to stand strong, even in adversity.  Hebrews 6:13 – 14 (Milk to Meat)

Simon Peter was still working on this.

But he was really still a FAITH CHILD

And his immaturity was about to show

So are many others who are still spiritual babes, living around faith but not walking in true faith.

Simon Peter had some work to do
He had the words down
He was in the right place
He was doing the work
BUT….So was Judas
He lacked the discipleship of love3
Love God AND Love others

Faith please God!       I want to make God smile!!    Do You?

Hebrews 11:6 “So, you see, it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that there is a God and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”  NLT

We often think we are exempt from struggle, or pain or trouble.

Matthew 5:44-46 “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!  In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too.”   NLT

As opposition grew, Simon Peter’s faith dwindled.

There will be times when your actions or words deny Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Simon Peter is acting perfectly HUMAN!

Christians are human beings, true.

Christians struggle with the humanity inside of them by birth, true.

Christians are called to WALK BY FAITH and not by sight.

And when we REPENT we are to GET BUSY for God!

So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen and build up your brothers.”

1 John 1:8-10 “If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth.  But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.”   NLT

Jesus showed us the path to faith

Know the Word
Pray…. continually

Stay CLOSE to the Father

All in love

But, we will blow it….just like Simon Peter, Paul and every other believer that ever walked the face of the earth!

  1. Get Faith
  2. Grow Faith
  3. Live by Faith
  4. Give faith to God

4 30                 Turning Back              Luke 17:11-19

God doing what God does

  • Traveling about (while in human form anyway)
  • Making and building relationships with people
  • Healing the hurting

The lepers doing what lepers do

  • Pushed out to the margins
  • Separated from the decent, healthy folks
    • They were seeking help
    • They were crying out for mercy
    • They needed healing
    • They needed to know someone cared
    • They craved human contact
  • Many, MANY others have ignored their cries, made standard responses (bless your hearts, praying for you, will give to the telethon,…etc)

Jesus did what Jesus usually does

  • Something very different from what us self-absorbed and weak faithed people do
  • He healed them
    • Not with a flourish
    • Not with many words
    • Not with mud and spit
      • Jesus sent them to the priests and healed them
        • “AS THEY WENT”
        • We should NOT overlook this phrase!

The lepers showed an extraordinary faith that most do not possess

  • They were still sick and afflicted
  • Nothing had changed
    • They Started towards the temple
    • They believed
    • They were healed AFTER they started their journey

9 lepers, well FORMER lepers, did EXACTLY what most people would do:

  • Took the GRACE God had given them and went on their way
    • No looking back
    • No thanks
    • No sustaining relationship developed
    • Just “I got mine…for now”
    • What makes the Dead Sea dead?
      • Because it is all the time receiving, never giving out anything.
      • The Dead Sea is 1,412 FEET BELOW sea level.
      • Mineral laden water flows into it, but evaporates or is absorbed leaving behind a liquid nothing can live in for long.
      • The Dead Sea is dying, shrinking at what is termed an “alarming rate”
    • Why is it that many Christians are cold?
    • Why is it that many Christians do not serve the Lord?
    • Why is it that many Christians do not GIVE to God through His church?
    • Because they are all the time receiving
      • Never thankFULL as the one leper
      • Grace flows in and either evaporates (goes unnoticed) or is absorbed
      • never giving out anything
        • only wanting to receive
      • Leaving life evaporating at an alarming rate

1 leper, well FORMER leper, did something different

  • He changed his path
  • He went to Jesus and GAVE HIM THANKS
  • He was THANKFULL for the GRACE he had been given and desired to praise Jesus
    • Praising God with a LOUD voice

One fact makes this SUBMISSION, HUMILITY and GRATITUDE even more amazing:

  • He was a SAMARITAN
    • They were haters of the Jews
    • They didn’t get along
    • By the Old Testament the Samaritans were contaminated by bad blood and false worship.
    • We all remember the story of the Good Samaritan in the New Testament.
    • Based on their Samarian homeland today we might call them Muslims or Palestinians….(south of the Sea of Galilee and North of the Dead Sea…between Jerusalem and Nazareth
      • Still enemies of the Jewish Nation today
    • But here, healed by Jesus Christ, THANKFULL
    • Never give up on a person or a people!
      • God can do greater things than you

Jesus healed and encouraged this Samaritan and sent him along his path full of praise, worship and FAITH in Jesus Christ.

  • Today maybe Jesus is asking “Were not more cleansed? Where are the rest?  I gave my life for all but how many return thanks?”
    • Have you been cleansed?
    • Have you lived thankFULL lives?

Temptations Twist

Luke 17:1-4 “And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.  Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.” ESV

  • Temptation is not sin…..temptation will occur
  • Temptations to sin: Scandal, snare/trap, occasion to fall
    • Maybe illustrate with large mouse trap and cheese
      • What could the cheese illustrate/stand for?
        • Anything that tempts us
          • Pride
          • Alcohol and/or drugs
          • Lust – adultery
          • Sexual immorality
          • Gossip
          • Jealousy
          • Anger
          • Rivalries
          • Dissensions
          • Other FLESH FUELED issues

 These temptations WILL COME

    • Do not think you are somehow above them
    • There is a price to be paid for giving into them
    • The trap will snap
    • Temptation is not sin
      • Giving INTO temptations trap is our problem
      • What baits your trap?
      • What are you likely to give into quickly?
    • Jesus was tempted BUIT NEVER SINNED
    • Adam and Eve were similarly tempted but fell into the trap

Matthew 4:4 – 11 “4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone,  but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”  Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”  11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.”  ESV

Hebrews 4:`4 – 16 “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  • ESPECIALLY if you cause another one to stumble
    • Little Ones: least, little, less, small in size, quantity, number or dignity
      • Not just talking about kids
  • Pay attention to YOURSELVES!
    • Watch what you are doing
    • Keep an eye on your hands
  • Pay attention to others
    • Hold them accountable to God’s Word as well
      • The caution is to GOD’S WORD
      • Not yours
      • Not your interpretation that fits your needs
    • Forgive the truly repentant
      • Forgiveness is not acceptance of the bad behavior
    • Temptations Twist
      • The Grace of God
        • Even though we did not deserve His Love…
          • We were rebellious
          • We were mean
          • We were caught by evil
          • Sinners, each and every one
        • ….at Calvary Jesus stepped into our trap and took our destruction away
          • Jesus suffered, was ridiculed and debased
          • Jesus shed His Blood for our sins
          • Jesus died in our place
        • We can be set free….redeemed by the shed blood of the Lamb of God

What’s it worth?

1 Corinthians 13;13 “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”  ESV

We have heard this scripture often and like the warm squishy feeling we get when reading the Word of God tell us what eternity will bring God’s Children.

Faith, Hope and Love are eternal.  Love is the greatest.

Jesus spoke often about the necessity of love in our world.  Love God first and foremost; love your neighbor as yourself.  Love is the greatest commandment.

Yet, we know that our world desperately lacks love.

Galatians 5:19 – 21  “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,  idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,  envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”  ESV

This is a list of the things that will keep us out of God’s planned eternity for us.  They find their roots in the Ten Commandments.

Have no false gods, have no fake gods, don’t use the real God’s name as a curse and remember to set aside a day for God.  You remember the first 4 right?  Their basic lesson is to LOVE GOD, while the next 6 speak of LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR.

Pride of the flesh, pride of the mind and pride in your spirit.  The common denominator, and greatest of these, is PRIDE!

  • Loving yourself more than you love God.
  • Loving yourself more than you love others.
  • Loving what you have and want more than anything else.

Selfish, arrogant pride is the very opposite of faith, hope and love.

It is this pride that got Adam and Eve kicked out of the Garden.                                                       It is this pride that brought great destruction to our planet in the Flood.                                       It is this pride that sent shadrach, meshach and abednego and  into the fiery furnace.           It is this same pride that keeps people separate from God today.

What do you hold most dear? What would you stubbornly hold onto if you knew it would be a destructive force in your life or worse, your eternity?

Substance abusers choose to hold on to their desire for the substance that makes them feel good for a short time while they allow that same substance to destroy their families, friendships and even their own health and life.  They know the problem but they like the problem more than they like anything or anyone else, including their selves.

The arrogant are willing to stomp on anyone and commit any act to climb their desired ladder to their perceived success.  The ones that do rise to the top find only loneliness, sadness and disappointment.  They sold their soul for flesh pleasing achievement.

Mark 8:34 – 38   “And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.  For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?  For what can a man give in return for his soul?  For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”   ESV

The good news is that God loves you and wants to deliver you from self and sin; from the pride that prevents us from humbly receiving the gift of faith, hope and love that God has for us all.

John 3:16 – 17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”  ESV

We have all fought prides grasp, the good news is that Jesus is not here to condemn you, but to provide you a pathway to salvation and eternal, life.  He wants you to have faith, hope and love forever.

To repent simply means to change your direction, from your way or the way the world has you traveling; and turn to God’s way and plan for your life.  In doing so you find peace, joy and safety; the results of faith, hope and love.  Trust God with your everything.

What is your soul worth?

What value do you place on the simple gifts of faith, hope and love?

God sent His only Son.

Jesus was the only person to walk the earth without sin, yet freely gave His life, shed His blood, so you could be forgiven.

There has been a great price paid for what can be received without cost to you.  Receive.

October 9                    God is Patient

Luke 13:6 – 9  “ Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.  So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’   “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it.  If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”   ESV

GOD’S PATIENCE – Verses  6-9

Jesus tells a story that could refer to Israel.

  • Israel certainly had failed God.
  • Israel had been sent many prophets, looking for repentance.
  • Jesus himself came and dug around the roots and added fertilizer, so to speak. Jesus KNEADED the Gospel into their lives
  • And yet Israel refused to repent and was destroyed eventually by the Romans.

But I believe this text is also written for us who are living on God’s Green Earth TODAY!

  • A lost person certainly had failed God….ALL have sinned
  • A LOST WORLD has certainly been sent many prophets, preachers, evangelists, teachers and other believers to lead it to repentance. Some good, some bad.  The TRUTH is here!
  • Jesus himself came and dug around the roots of our lives and added fertilizer, so to speak. Jesus WORKED the Gospel into our lost world…..into their lives, into our lives.
  • The HOLY SPIRIT is here rooting out the TRUTH of our lives today, fertilizing, pruning and directing us towards JESUS!.
  • And yet a LOST WORLD refuses to repent and will surely experience destruction soon.
    • Time is certainly RUNNING OUT
    • The SEASON of HARVEST is soon coming!!
    • Are we willing to see our friends and neighbors CUT DOWN and lost forever?
      • When a little work could change their eternity?
    • The lost person deserves judgment, but God, IN HIS PATIENCE, delays judgment, so that the person has more time to repent.

Often you and I would be like the land owner in the story, we think the LOST PERSON should be removed or judged, but God delays. He delays and convicts the guilty people of His Creation.  People like you and I.

Perhaps, if given more time, the person will come to his senses and repent.

    2nd, 3rd, 5th, 874,376,549,587,034 chances to repent and more

In fact the Lord has not returned yet, in order to give more people time to repent. 2 Peter 3:8-10

“ But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”   ESV

So, how does this affect us as Christians?

  • We KNOW the love of God
  • We KNOW that the Lord is coming.
  • There are those who NEED the Lord.
    • We should be hard at work stirring up the hard packed soil of a lost worlds heart and pouring on LIVING WATER
    • We have to WORK IT!
      • We need to SHARE THE WORK
      • We need to SHARE our Story
      • We need to do everything we can to lead them to Jesus SO THEY CAN RISE!!!
    • As long as the Lord is patiently delaying His return, we should be doing two things:
      • Striving to live Faithful, obedient Godly lives.
      • Preparing the HARVEST
        • Praying
          • Time Spent on our KNEES is time well spent
        • Sharing the Gospel

Peter follows up his talk about the judgment with these words for believers. 2 Peter 3:11-14

2 Peter 3:11-14   “Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,  waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!   But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.   Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.     ESV

Let’s be busy living for the Lord in such a way, that those who need to repent see the need because of us.

God is being patient. We need to be busy.

There is a bunch of work to be done before it is HARVEST TIME!

You Ain’t No Better              October 2, 2016 Luke 13:1 – 5

Luke 13:1-5 “There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.  And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way?   No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.   Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?  No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”   ESV

So…Who sinned worse?  The folks murdered by an evil political leader OR the folks killed in a construction accident?

  • We like to believe we are THE BEST.
  • We like to think that WE HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT and no one else is as RIGHT as we are here in our little group.
  • We talk down about others but not about ourselves.
  • We claim to know the deep thoughts and plans of God by saying that any problem or disaster they face are results of their sins.
  • They are WORSE than us!
  • Every natural disaster some “religious” TV person or celebrity claims their moral failure brought their disaster.
  • Remember the messages we heard like this about New Orleans after Katrina.

We are foolish and have “STINKING THINKING”

We FORGET that we are ALL SINNERS and have FALLEN SHORT of the GLORY of God.   (Romans 3:23)

We forget that the sun rises on the evil and the good AND it rains on the just and the unjust. (Matthew 5:45)

We forget that we ALL live in faulty perishable bodies while on this earthly plain.

We forget that BAD THINGS do indeed happen to GOOD PEOPLE!

Why?  Several reasons.  Here are four:

  1. Our Fallen, messed up world
  2. Our bad choices
  3. The bad choices of others
  4. For the Glory of God.

You are no better than anyone else.

You have equal chance and opportunity for disaster to strike.

You also have the opportunity TO MAKE A CHANGE for your eternity!

RECEIVE Eternal Life by GRACE alone through FAITH alone in CHRIST alone.

Ephesians 2:8-10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”   ESV

Repent or you will PERISH.            Perish = Die ETERNALLY

You are the same as everyone else.

1 Timothy 2:1-6 “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.  This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”    ESV

This is the ULTIMATE EQUALITY!  All Lives Matter to Jesus!

We have been taught as Christians how infinitely SPECIAL we are because GOD LOVES US and provided HIS SON JESUS for the forgiveness of our SINS and a COMPOLETELY NEW LIFE

  • We are SPECIAL to Jesus!
  • Specifically, and Individually!
  • Just like EVERYONE ELSE!

Mark 1:14-15 “Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”  ESV

What is this Gospel Jesus brought?

John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”   ESV

In our world today we spend so much time DEALING with the faults of others.
