Mary    Luke 1:26 – 38 and others

Mary was the earthly mother of Jesus Christ

She was a normal woman God used for His extraordinary purposes

Mary submitted to God’s call and bore our savior as a baby and raised Him to maturity.

  • Mary saw her Son accomplish great things
  • Mary saw her Son’s heart for humanity
  • Mary heard her Son teach the Word of God
  • Mary saw the boundless love her Son had for her and others

Mary also saw the hatred in the eyes and hearts of the Temple Elites and government officials

  • Mary saw and heard their plots and plans against her Boy
  • Mary saw her Son falsely accused and arrested
  • Mary witnessed the fake/political trials of her Son
  • Mary witnessed her Son being ridiculed and spit upon
  • Mary heard the lies and vile language spewing from the mouths of her neighbors and leaders
  • Mary witnessed the beatings her Son endured
  • Mary was present as the remains of His beaten flesh were hoisted naked upon a roman cross for all to see
  • Mary watched her Son die for the failures of all those gathered around and more
  • Mary buried her Son

But this is not all the story

Mary heard the love her Son had for her as he hung on the cross and provided for her future

Mary heard His cry, “It Is Finished”

Mary found His tomb EMPTY on Sunday, just as He had promised

Mary knew Her Son was God and would always, ALWAYS Live!

As a mother, Mary knew love and pain, triumph and tragedy, confusion and confidence through the life of her Son, Jesus.

As a believer, Mary found salvation, faith, hope and love through the Savior, the Messiah, the Son God gave to us through her.

Many mothers understand the sacrifice of parenthood.

Many mothers understand that there will be days of great pride and days of great pain.

Mothers submit to these, and an unknown future joyfully!

Motherhood is anticipated with expectant joy.

Love.  A great love that leads Mommy’s to bear the pain of childbirth to experience a lifetime of Love.

Luke 1:26 – 36  “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.  Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”   Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.  “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”  The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month.   For the word of God will never fail.”  Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.”

Deuteronomy 6:4 – “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.  And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.  Repeat them again and again to your children.  [MINDS AND HEARTS] Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.  Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.  Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

Tomorrow we will be celebrating the great blessing God pours into our lives! We will celebrate the great blessing of our new life in Christ with a baptism service, the great joy of new life as His creation with our Baby Dedication Service and the great blessing of carrying and caring for His Creation in Motherhood as we honor all the mothers present! We will indeed have a great day tomorrow at First Baptist! Join us for Sunday School at 10 am and Church at 11 am tomorrow morning.

May 14            “ A Woman’s Grit”    Luke 18:1 – 8

Most of us remember the movie “True Grit” in either its first or second release.  What we may not realize is that the movie “True Grit” is not about Rooster Cogburn (John Wayne or Jeff Bridges) but is about a 14 year old girl named Mattie Ross (Kim Darby or  Hailee Stanfield)!

Mattie is the one who picked Rooster to help her track down her father’s murderer.  There was absolutely NOTHING going to stop this stubborn and feisty young woman from her task!

Grit is defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.”

  • God wants us to pray
    • Talking builds relationships
    • God wants us to TALK with Him
    • Even if we don’t say much – listen
  • God wants us to remain hopeful
    • We so quickly turn to the dark side – what is the WORST
    • We get all bound up in the “What Ifs”
    • We rarely think the best thing is happening
  • Hope is built in our heart
    • not our eyes, hands, minds, TV shows, etc.
  • To show us the right path God used a PERSISTENT women
    • She had been a wife and was probably a mom
    • God knows the love and strength of a woman’s heart
    • Especially for her family
  • A strong woman never gives up, gives in or gives out
    • She fights for her family
    • She pushes for what is right
  • Reality:
      • Dads is still sitting in his chair wondering what’s going on WHILE Momma already got it done!
      • IF Momma’s first attempt at getting it done meets RESISTANCE…..MOMMA IS GOING TO KEEP ON TRYING!
        • Ain’t no GIVE UP in Momma
    • Jerry Clower is famous for saying “WHATEVER MOMMA WANTS…..MOMMA GETS!”
    • It is not original with him though…it comes from this text in Holy Scriptures!
  • She nagged him
    • she never let up or relented or LOST HOPE
    • even though the temptation to quit must have been there after so many attempts and so many failures
      • but she persisted
  • Because of her persistence the Judge relented
    • He figured out that if he didn’t do something she would keep coming
    • He knew she needed justice,
      • but he evidently didn’t want to be bothered.
      • Maybe heartless or maybe lazy or perhaps he didn’t see the value of wasting time on her.
      • But because she persisted he relented and helped
  • God is different than this Judge
    • God Loves You
    • God is THE Righteous Judge
    • He wants to help
    • God is on your side
    • God is OK with your continual prayers
    • NAG God all you want – BE PERSISTENT
  • Here is the question for us this text poses:
    • When the Son of Man returns WILL HE FIND ANY FAITH ON EARTH?
      • Will He find a people like the widow who perceived in faith
        • True faith continues to pray
        • With a FERVENT HOPE
        • True faith keeps its heart toward God
        • Trusting
      • Will He find people who simply gave up
        • Turned to the comforts of the world
        • Turned to the evil lies of our enemy
        • Lost hearts
  • NEVER give up on God!
  • He certainly NEVER gives up on you

Mothers Day 2014

John 19:26 – 27 “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”  Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”

  1. I poses a question a few days ago that asked “Did Jesus love His Mother?”
    1. A question based on Luke 8:19-21 “Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”   ESV
  2. So the question, “Did Jesus TRULY love His Mother?”
    1. Of course He did, that is a silly question!
    2. In Context, Jesus was talking about the Family of God

i.     About being good soil, witnessing and faithfulness

ii.     Jesus was talking about doing the Word of God

  1. And few doubt that Mary did the Word and Work of God
  1. Yes, Jesus loved His Mother
    1. The first command with a promise is  “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),  “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”   Ephesians 6:1 – 3
  2. Jesus would never leave His mother standing alone
    1. He made sure she was taken care of physically, He was already caring for her Spiritually
    2. He gave here purpose – To care for John
  3. Jesus will never leave you standing alone either
    1. He loves you
    2. He is providing for you Physically and Spiritually
    3. He has a purpose for you
  4. On Mount Calvary Jesus proved His love for His Mommy
    1. There, at the same place He proved how much He loved you and I as well.
  5. Stand with your Momma!
    1. After what she went through for you!?

i.     40 weeks of carrying you inside

ii.     2 years of carrying you outside

iii.     And, lets be real….18 years OR MORE of carrying you along life’s roads

  1. Don’t disrespect her

i.     Care for her

  1. Don’t talk back to her

i.     ENCOURAGE her

  1. Don’t ignore her

i.     Spend time with her

  1. I know many of us bought cards, flowers, candy, etc for our moms today

i.     And they appreciate these tokens I am sure

ii.     BUT, they would most likely enjoy spending time with you FAR MORE than those gifts

iii.     Take care of your Mom

  1. While there is still the Opportunity
  2. Jesus’ time on earth as human was over
    1. He made sure His Momma was taken care of
  3. YOU take care of your Momma NOW!
    1. Don’t you let her stand alone!
