Encourage:  give support, confidence, advice or hope to someone.

Be of Good Comfort

Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Chorus Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

2 Corinthians 13:11 “Dear brothers and sisters, I close my letter with these last words: Rejoice. Change your ways. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”   NLT

Today there is much said and done to discourage people.

The sad part is that the more hurting or broken a person is, the more discouragement is thrown at them.

  • Lady had LOTS of reasons to distrust men
    • She had been married 5 times
    • Who knows how many times she had been lied to, cheated on and mistreated
  • She had lots of history, shame and secrets to keep hidden from strangers, her neighbors and other men
    • She was a woman with a bad reputation
    • Does not mean she was a bad person
      • Just the subject of much gossip
      • Recipient of many disapproving stares and comments
    • She had been bullied and hurt by everyone
      • She probably received LITTLE to NO encouragement
    • Her was another strange man starting a conversation with her and asking her to serve Him
      • But this was no mere man
      • HOPE had arrived
        • Encouragement was before her
      • Here was man her race didn’t get along well with
      • Jews and Samaritans were generally enemies
        • They just didn’t get along
          • Religiously
          • Relationally
          • Culturally
          • Civilly
    • Jesus Encouraged her by:
      • Recognizing her as a person
      • Recognizing that she existed
      • Speaking to her politely
      • Telling her there was hope for her life
      • Being open and honest with her
      • Speaking the truth to her, IN LOVE
        • He knew about her history
        • He knew her life
        • He STILL offered her eternal life
        • He STILL told her He was the Messiah she had heard about
          • He was here for her.
        • Who do you know that needs to hear some encouraging Words?
          • Maybe even an enemy?
          • Maybe someone who is of a different belief system as you
          • Maybe they are of a different culture or faith
            • Encourage them
              • With Your Words
              • With your actions
              • With God’s Word

Hebrews 10:23-25 “Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.  Think of ways to encourage one another to outbursts of love and good deeds. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near.”    NLT
