Why Carry a Gun?

My old Grandpa said to me, ‘Son, there comes a time in every man’s life when he stops bustin’ knuckles and starts bustin’ caps and usually it’s when he becomes too old to take a whoopin’.’

  • I don’t carry a gun to kill people; I carry a gun to keep from being killed.
    • Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.” ESV  (do not take innocent life)
  • I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil; I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the World.
    • Proverbs 25:26 “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” ESV
  • I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government; I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.
  • I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry; I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.
    • James 4:17 “Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.” NLT
  • I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone; I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.
  • I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man; I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.
    • Joel 3:9-10 “Proclaim this among the nations: Consecrate for war; stir up the mighty men. Let all the men of war draw near; let them come up.  Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am a warrior.” ESV
  • I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.
    • Psalm 144:1-2 “Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; He is my steadfast Love and my Fortress, my Stronghold and my Deliverer, my Shield and He in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.”   ESV
  • I don’t carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.
  • I don’t carry a gun to bring harm, I carry a gun to bring protection to my family, my friends, myself and to YOU!
    • Psalm 82:4 “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” ESV
  • I don’t carry a gun because I want to be a policeman. I could never do the work of these brave law enforcement professionals, I am not brave enough, trained enough or strong enough.  I carry a gun because I know there are far more bad guys than good guys with a badge and they are limited by time and distance from being everywhere I am and where you are as well.   Average police response time in our country is 10 minutes.  If you are being attacked you should be praying that someone will intervene before 10 minutes.
  • Personally, I carry a gun because I’m too young to die and too old to take a whoopin’!

Bullies and Believers                              Defeating bullying in our midst

Shedding the old Person and becoming a new Creation!

Becoming a BETTER person

The threat and effect of bullying is very real

  1. Bullying is a very real and present danger
  2. It is not harmless
  3. It is not a minor problem
  4. One life lost is too many
  5. One person destroyed is too many
  6. Crosswalk.com reported that over 60,000 kids miss school because of bullying
  7. The American Psychological Association reported that 90 percent of 4th – 8th graders report being victims of bullying in some form
  8. Several school violence events have been sparked by bullying
  9. Columbine being the most infamous
  10. Bullying is really individual terrorism
  11. Wrecks lives
  12. Brings a life of fear to people
  13. Breeds rebellion
  14. Leads to fights
  15. Leads to suicides
  16. Leads to low self esteem
  17. Destroys character
  18. Bullying can take the form of:
  19. Spreading rumors
  20. Teasing
  21. Exclusion
  22. Threats
  23. Gossip
  24. Mean words
  25. Name calling
  26. Oppression
  27. Slavery
  28. Taking advantage
  29. Hitting
  30. Kicking
  31. Pushing
  32. Other physical violence
  33. Stealing
  34. Damaging property
  35. Graffiti
  36. Destruction

iii.      other

  1. So many just give into the bully
  2. Surrender their power and life over to them
  3. In his book Fuzzy Memories, Jack Handey writes: There used to be this bully who would demand my lunch money every day. Since I was smaller, I would give it to him. Then I decided to fight back. I started taking karate lessons. But then the karate lesson guy said I had to start paying him five dollars a lesson. So I just went back to paying the bully.
Too many people feel it is easier just to pay the bully than it is to learn how to defeat him.
  4. There is hope and help for those experiencing bullying and for the bullier
  5. One of my all time favorite TV shows, for having good moral lessons as plot lines, was the “Andy Griffith Show.” There was an episode where young Opie was having his “Milk nickel” bullied away from him and could not afford any milk for lunch. “You wouldn’t want me to get weak bones?” Well, Andy found out about the trouble and looked to find a way to help Opie without making Opie ashamed or dependent of his fathers help all of the time. In itself this is a good lesson to parents, children must learn, and earn, some things on their own in order for them to fully appreciate it later in life, but that is not our point in this illustration. Andy began to tell Opie about the time that Odie Snitch stole Andy’s fishing hole away from him when he was Opie’s age. Young Andy had to eventually face Odie Snitch to rid himself of his awful feeling of being “Lilly livered” and found that a punch in the nose didn’t really hurt when taken for a good cause and that bullies often can’t back up their words with deeds. Opie took the words to heart and faced down his extortionist the next day. Opie came away with a “Bute” of a shiner, but he didn’t even feel the black eye because the sweet feeling of the loosing his trouble and regaining what was rightfully his.
  6. The point, you may ask? No trouble is as bad as it once seemed when completed than it did when we first dreaded and feared it.
  7. I would never advocate responding to a bully with violence, but it has proven worthy of our consideration.  Not because of the violent act, but because of the empowering act of standing up for yourself, your person and your rights.

iii.      Taylor Swift  said “If you’re horrible to me, I’m going to write a song about it, and you won’t like it. That’s how I operate.”

  1. “Some people won’t be happy until they’ve pushed you to the ground. What you have to do is have the courage to stand your ground and not give them the time of day. Hold on to your power and never give it away.”

Proverbs 6:12-21 “What are worthless and wicked people like? They are constant liars, signaling their deceit with a wink of the eye, a nudge of the foot, or the wiggle of fingers. Their perverted hearts plot evil, and they constantly stir up trouble. But they will be destroyed suddenly, broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing. There are six things the LORD  hates— no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family. My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck.”  NLT

Living above Bullying  /  Believers Beating Bullying

Leviticus 19:17-19 “Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin.  “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD . “You must obey all my decrees.”   NLT

Christians should be working hard to teach and encourage:

  • Better friendships
  • More confidence
  • Individual courage
  • Servanthood – helping others
  • Being ok with who you are – being the person God made you to be
  • Better grades
  • Better health
  • Doing the right thing
  • Character
  • Citizenship
  • Morality
  • Unity

Matthew 5:43-48 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”  NLT

  1. Love your neighbor
  2. Love your enemies
  3. Pray for those who attack you
  4. Do not take the easy road (love those easy to love)
  5. Rise above the culture and their influence
  6. Dare to be different

  1. Do what is Right – by God’s standards – not mans
  2. Love mercy – love treating people right, whether they deserve it or not.
  3. You do not know their life
  4. You do not know their stress
  5. You do not know just how close to exploding they are
  6. Walk humbly with God
  7. Realize that you are far from perfect yourself
  8. You are flawed, faulty and failing
  9. Matthew7:1-5 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. “

Romans 12:9-18 “Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.  Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.  Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
  • Our bigger problem is not the people who are our problem
  • They are but tool/weapons
  • You do not blame the gun: Guns don’t kill people, people kill people
  • You don’t blame the pencil:pencils don’t misspell words, people misspell words
  • Behind every drug smuggler caught is a drug gang and leadership that enticed him, tempted him, threatened him and used him.
  • Behind every murderer, liar, misspeller, and drug trafficker there is:
  • A demand for drugs

  7. You just may not want it
  8. So you let it roar.
  9. Keep praying
  10. Really help those who are in need
  11. Help the Bullied
  12. Help the bully

  19. Luke 10:30-37 “Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.  The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
  20. Live in harmony with people
  21. To be in agreement
  22. All the parts working together

Jesus took the Bullying so we would not have to!

Jesus was bullied by the government, the temple elite, the community business people, everyone

  • The “Sin Business”people were attacking Him because they lost money

o    Acts 16:16-24 “One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a demon-possessed slave girl. She was a fortune-teller who earned a lot of money for her masters. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be saved.”  This went on day after day until Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon within her, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And instantly it left her. Her masters’ hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities at the marketplace. “The whole city is in an uproar because of these Jews!” they shouted to the city officials. “They are teaching customs that are illegal for us Romans to practice.”  A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.”

  • Temple Elite were attacking Him because they lost power and influence
  • The government leaders were attacking Him because they felt they were losing power and control
  • The kings were attacking Him because they did not want their people worshipping anyone except them
  • The people were attacking Him because He was upsetting the “Status Quo”

Their bullying did not work out so well for them then, and it doesn’t work out so well today.

Romans 3:23-26 “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe in Jesus.”

John 3:16-17 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”  NLT

Jesus is the Anti-Bully

Philippians 2:5-11 “5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6

Though he was God,

he did not think of equality with God

as something to cling to.

he gave up his divine privileges;

he took the humble position of a slave

and      was born as a human being.

When   he appeared in human form,

8          he humbled himself

in obedience to God

and      died a criminal’s death on a cross.

God elevated him to the place of highest honor

and      gave him the name above all other names,\

that                              at the name of Jesus

every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and      every tongue confess

that      Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

        • He abandoned any tool, equipment, idea that may have distracted him
          • The King tried to distract him with bad ideas
            • Wear my armor
            • Fight for a human reward
          • The crowd doubted his abilities
          • The giant taunted him
        • He focused on the FIGHT at hand
        • One rock – One shot
        • David focused on a singular task
      • David moved FORWARD with BOLDNESS
        • He ran TOWARD the Giant
        • He used every talent and tool God had given him
        • He found GREAT VICTORY

Take to the FIELD OF HONOR Thursday with

Always moving FORWARD

Luke 7:18 – 23     Persistence – Hang in there

I wish I was more like John the Baptist.

  • Radically devoted to his faith.
  • Knew Jesus from before he was born.
  • Served God faithfully, even in tough times
    • PLUS He wore Camel hair and a leather belt
  • He is well known and respected for his Faith and Works to this day

But, John was not perfect.  John sometimes wondered…..

  • John was wondering if Jesus was indeed who he thought He was
    • After John had baptized Jesus
    • After John saw the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descend upon Jesus
    • After John had heard the Voice from heaven proclaim to Jesus “You are my beloved Son, with You I am well pleased”

Now John was wondering

  • Are you the REAL DEAL?
  • Did I make a mistake in telling others you were the One?
  • Should I be offended by You?
  • Did You claim to be someone You were not?

I think John had a picture in his mind of what Jesus would be doing and what Jesus was actually doing did not match his thoughts

  • Many of the Jews thought Jesus would become their earthly king right then and there
  • He was to deliver them from the Romans/Government
  • He was to reign and rule
    • Not preach
    • Certainly, Not be a poor carpenter
  • John was wavering in his faith
  • John was wondering if he had been wrong and he should change his focus and start looking for the “real deal”
  • We do the same thing today
    • We may have the same questions as John
    • We may wonder the same as John
      • God, why is this happening if You are here?
        • God, aren’t You supposed to be KING?
      • Why are these things happening to good people
        • Why are these things happening to me?
          • I work so hard for You
          • I sacrificed so much for you…
          • I waited so long for you…
        • God I asked you for this yesterday….
        • God I do not understand….
        • Is it You God? Is it really You?
      • Jesus was sending a bigger message to John
        • Hang in there, John
        • Yes John, I AM!  Here is the proof!
        • I am THE REAL DEAL
        • Psalm 46:8-11 “Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”  The Lord  of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. ESV
        • Persevere John! Keep doing the Work I gave you
        • I got this! Persevere in the faith
        • Hang in there! He Hung there for you!
      • John, God led Me to you
      • When you have times of WONDERING or WANDERING
        • Go back to God
          • You don’t have to be ashamed of your FAITH
          • Do not be offended – Keep preaching – Keep serving
        • You do not have to find someone else to ask for you
          • People will take advantage of your weakness for their gain
          • GO TO GOD!
        • ASK HIM! We wonder because we do not ask!
          • We don’t have because we do not seek Him and Ask Him
        • You do not have to be ashamed of Him
        • You certainly do not need to be OFFENDED by Him
          • Hang in there! God’s Got This!

Victims or Victors                  10-4-15

We have once again been visited by Evil.

We should not be SHOCKED, we have been affected by Evil since the FIRST FEW walked the earth.

As normal, some want to blame society, mental illness, guns, knives, gasoline, hammers, water, cars, rocks, jawbones, etc – whatever tool evil chose to use; instead of the truth:  Evil doing its will through man.

Lets look at Oregon and those involved.

Never doubt that there is great evil in this world

Jesus clearly taught us there is evil and evils PURPOSE is to STEAL AND KILL AND DESTROY!

Today, Evil is at our door steps

Openly attacking Christians in the public square

It is the disorganized “lone wolf”

It is the organized evil of radicals and terrorists.

Evil is greater than flesh and blood

That is why our primary battle is a SPIRITUAL BATTLE and not a physical one.

Ephesians 6:10-14 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” ESV

If we UNDERSTAND that there is evil out there, HOW DO WE RESPOND?

Pray for those the families who lost loved ones and for the injured.

Christians are VICTORS not Victims

Romans 8:35-39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  ESV

Somehow we have come to a mentality that we SHOULD BE VICTIMS

That we must lay down our arms and accept the abuse and rampage of others

  • We deserve it…somehow

  • Christians ARE NOT the worlds PUNCHING BAG
  • Christians are not the WORLD’S DOOR MAT
  • It is MORE THAN OK – IT IS EXPECTED for Christians to DEFEND their faith!
  • Do MORE THAN sing “Victory in Jesus” LIVE IT!

Merriam-Webster defines a Martyr as: “A person who is killed or who suffers greatly for a religion, cause, etc.”

  • In this case for their faith

The bravest person in the world on October 1st was not the brave man who was shot 7 times to save lives in Oregon.

  • He was brave, not doubt.
  • Like the 3 US Military men who stopped a terrorist in France, the man in Oregon is a HERO! But, maybe not a martyr or the Bravest of those present that day.

BUT, the bravest person in the world was the SECOND person who stared down that gun barrel and professed they are a CHRISTIAN, after they saw the first one shot.

They were not ashamed of the Gospel

Romans 1:16-17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” ESV

  • We live by FAITH and NOT by FEAR!
  • We profess our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ with all we have, EVEN IF it is our dying breath!
  • WE NEVER back down
  • WE NEVER shy away
  • WE NEVER deny our faith
    • Faith that can be denied is a false faith
  • If we have assured VICTORY then we need not fear defeat!
  • We ALL have a responsibility to defend our FAITH, our FAMILIES and our FRIENDS!
    • The Bible clearly talks about times when the PEOPLE OF GOD must “pound their plowshares into swords and say ‘I am a WARRIOR”
      • Not in vengeance or retribution
        • But in DEFENSE
        • In JUSTICE
        • In FAITH
      • Hear these Words from God :
        • Ecclesiastes 3:8 “a time for war, and a time for peace.” ESV
        • Proverbs 25:24 “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” ESV
          • Dirty, Sickening, rotten
          • Psalm 82:4 “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” ESV
          • James 4:17 “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” ESV
        • In all of this we are careful to guard our hearts
          • We do ALL for the Glory of God
          • We do ALL through HIS Strength and Will
        • This TEXT reverberated in my soul as God led me through this message process over the last few days. I will read the whole text then focus quickly on ONE VERSE:
        • Psalm 23 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” ESV

We have nothing to fear because GOD is with us, protecting, providing and preparing our way.  We can FOLLOW HIM WITHOUT FEAR, even in FEARFULL situations!

But, look at this:

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

Sometimes the fear overwhelms us.

Sometimes, like little kids fighting their naptime, God needs to make us lie down and rest IN HIM!

Sometimes God has to POUR OUT HIS PEACE UPON US.

We can have peace even when it doesn’t make sense BECAUSE IT IS FROM GOD!

Do you have GOD’s PEACE?

Remember that you can have VICTORY IN JESUS!     Isaiah 54:17 “no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed,” (prosper) ESV
