A Day of Offense

Today our culture seems afraid to say or do anything because we “might offend” somebody.

The struggle is real – the premise is not.

If you breathe you will offend people – MANY PEOPLE

A NON-PC Palm Sunday                       Luke 19:28 – 44

  1. Jesus offends many
    1. Here we find him offending the RELIGIOUS LEADERS of the local church
      1. Catch that?
    2. Paul wrote about this: Romans 9:32-33 “They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,  as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”   ESV
    3. The Temple elite were worried that he would “upset their apple cart”
      1. They were getting wealthy
      2. They were gaining power
  • They had it made
    1. All because they surrendered their Holy Position to the political powers of the day.
      1. If the Romans were happy – they were happy
    2. There are many in the church positions today that are just like these Pharisees of old.
      1. They enjoy the mega church lifestyle
      2. They like the big houses and fancy cars. (and top of the line jets)
  • They like things “Running Smooth”
    1. They rarely if ever talk about Sin and Judgement
    2. They marginalize Jesus Christ
    3. One went on national TV and when asked if Jesus Christ was the only way to Heaven would only say that that was God’s decision!
  1. Perhaps much of the blame can be pointed right back at us
    1. We do not like uncomfortable preaching
    2. We do not like to be told we have failed
    3. We do not like to be called SINNERS
    4. We do not want to CHANGE
    5. We prefer to have preaching that is full of ROSES and SPRING MEADOWS
    6. We reject the harsh realities of our life
  2. 2 Timothy 4:3-5 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” ESV
    1. Folks: Jesus is the ONLY WAY to God!
      1. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and NOONE gets to the Father EXCEPT through Him!
    2. JESUS is the ONLY ONE WHO died for your sins
  3. False God’s want you to KILL or DIE for them
    1. Jesus DIED for you!
    2. Jesus taught love, servanthood and compassion.
    3. Christ gives you OPTIONS – not a blade.
  4. Who else suffered and bled and died for YOU?
  5. Who else came so you could have LIFE and LIFE more abundant.
  6. The Temple Elite offended Christ
    1. Shut that noise up!
    2. We don’t do that here!
    3. REBUKE your disciples
      1. Jesus told them NO!
      2. He rebuked them instead.
  • “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out”
  1. We see this religious liberalism/legalism today
    1. We are right and you are wrong
    2. We do not want to hear this so STOP IT
  • I don’t care who you are, this noise isn’t allowed
  1. Everyone else can have the FREEDOM OF SPEECH except you Christians!
    1. We have heard enough from you!
  2. They had changed their loyalty from God to Government
    1. For money and power
  3. They prided themselves in their freedom from the literal Word of God
    1. Choosing their own interpretation
    2. They hated Jesus because He knew the Word and properly applied it to them
  • Jesus called them out for their failures
    1. They MUST praise me or the power of My presence would cause the rocks to cry out
  1. It is ok to offend people with your praise of Jesus Christ
  2. We have no human or constitutional right TO NOT BE OFFENDED!
  3. The Reality is that you are EXPECTED to praise and Worship Jesus Christ as your King, your Lord and your Savior WITH EVERYTHING HE HAS GIVEN YOU!
  4. Some will not like it! They have issues
  5. Some will tell you to shut up. DO NOT
  6. Some will tell you that you are strange
    1. A Real Jesus Freak there!
    2. Good! They see there is something different about you!  Tell them WHO the DIFFERENCE IS!
  7. The people offended Jesus
    1. Their lack of Faith
    2. They knew no peace
      1. Know peace = know peace
      2. Know no peace = know no peace
    3. They had opportunity but chose to follow the fake church leaders who only cared about themselves
    4. They rejected truth
    5. So, Jesus told them truth.
      1. And I am sure most were offended
        1. Your enemy is coming
        2. You will be destroyed
      2. Because you did not live your life by faith KNOWING the Day of the Lord is soon coming.
    6. Jesus did not destroy them, they were doing a good enough job of that themselves
    7. Jesus did not lie to them or “tickle their ears” because they needed TRUTH
    8. Jesus WEPT for them because they were lost and on a collision path with HELL.
  8. I know that this is not the Palm Sunday message you were expecting NOR the one you wanted to hear.
    1. But, this is the real world introduction into what this week is all about and it Gruesome climax on Friday.
      1. The Temple Elite were offended by Jesus
      2. The Crowd, worshipping today, would soon be offended by Jesus and cry out for His DEATH
  • The local government was offended by Jesus
  1. The Roman Government was offended by Jesus
    1. They all sought to kill Him
  2. Jesus was offended by all their sin.
    1. He sought only to SAVE THEM from their selves and the sin that had them TRAPPED.
  3. This week we find mankind seemingly doing everything HUMANLY possible to separate itself from God
    1. We see the worst of Humanity
      1. From a lost world perspective
      2. From a religious perspective
      3. From a government perspective
        1. This is the worst of a PC crowd gone wild
      4. We also see the VERY BEST OF GOD
        1. Romans 5:6-11 “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good.  But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.  And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.  For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.” NLT

We Need Jesus

Jesus taught us: “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”     Matthew 5:3

  1. There is no problem in you Jesus cannot take care of for you.
    1. Sin, self, satan
    2. Jesus is able to remove the wrong within you
    3. Jesus is able to cleanse your innermost failures
      1. Even the failures of your heart
    4. The very desire for wrong can be driven out
    5. You can be CLEANSED
    6. You can be FORGIVEN
    7. You can be RESTORED
    8. You can be a TESTIMONY of Gods power and Love
  2. There is no illness effecting you Jesus cannot heal.
    1. Bacterial or viral, disease or damage, physical or mental
    2. You can be HEALED
    3. You can be SAVED
    4. You can SERVE
  3. There is no problem in your community Jesus cannot impact.
    1. Jesus can take care of every one
    2. WE often talk about needing to “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” in our community.
      1. The biggest and best difference we can make is to:
        1. Realize your NEED FOR JESUS
        2. Accept the gift of healing and hope Jesus has for you
        3. Serve Him
        4. Be the GRATEFUL, SERVING CHURCH MEMBER He has called you to be
        5. Share the Gospel so others may have the HOPE AND JOY you have found
          1. The more you give your faith away the more faith you will have to share with others!

Isaiah 59:1-2 “Behold, the Lord ‘s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”  ESV
