Growing Pains  – Growing Like Jesus       Luke 2:51-52

Luke 2:51-52 “And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.  And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.”   ESV

Verse 51 – It is important to note, that although Jesus did express some independence in His commitment to His Heavenly Father, He did not become a smart mouthed rebellious twelve-year-old!

Jesus did not LOOK DOWN against the MERE HUMANS who His Father chose to raise Him!     Neither should we.

Luke quickly shows us that Jesus stayed in submission to His parents.  As kids and teens begin to express their independence, it is IMPORTANT that we do not enter into REBELLION and DISOBEDIENCE.

YOU COULD EVEN LEARN SOMETHING from them!

After all, chances are they have already made the same mistakes you are about to make and can spare you the negative consequences they could not avoid.

Honor, obedience and respect are still to be given to parents.

There is a little aside in this verse. Note that Mary “kept all these sayings in her heart.” Also look at Luke 2:19 “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”  ESV

I believe that these remembrances of Jesus birth and early years may have come from Mary. Luke was an historian, not a mother.

I think Luke did His homework and asked Mary about the childhood of Jesus. Mary, who remembered, shared what had happened.

A child can bring much joy to a parents heart by living there life right before God, bringing honor to God and their parents.

Verse 52 – Now we see that there was a normal process of development for our Lord. He grew in four areas that everyone of us should grow in.

HE GREW INTELLECTUALLY – wisdom

            Jesus went to school

Jesus went to Church/Sunday School

Jesus LEARNED stuff

He didn’t skip class

He did not backtalk His teacher

He knew the importance of and the gift of education

                        Learning is part of growing

HE GREW PHYSICALLY – stature

He was born a Baby – tiny, tiny baby

He did not stay that way – He grew up – like they tend to do

He worked hard – chores, trade

These were harder times. No gas weed eaters or dishwashers

He played – outside…in the streets and fields and groves

Jesus did not lay on the couch playing video games or watching GLEE

Playing and imagining is part of growing

HE GREW SPIRITUALLY – favor with God

            He went to Church

He listened to His Sunday School teachers and His Pastor

He asked questions

He read the scripture even though HE IS THE WORD

He lived His Father’s Word

Getting closer to God is part of growing

HE GREW SOCIALLY – favor with man

           love 2

Would Jesus Facebook and Twitter?

We may never know

He was not a ridged fanatic – He was not “that guy”

He was not a violent zealot

He lived an ACCOUNTABLE GRACE

He lived FAITH in a REAL WORLD

Jesus liked people – HE LOVED PEOPLE

Jesus went out of His way to meet people and be with them

Jesus took the time to MEET and LISTEN to PEOPLE

JESUS LOVED PEOPLE ENOUGH TO SHARE HIS LOVE WITH THEM AND GIVE HIS ALL FOR THEM

Making friends and losing friends is part of growing

And we too, should GROW LIKE JESUS: We should walk in the “Footsteps of Jesus”

Intellectually – Continuing to accrue the right kind of wisdom.

Physically – growing, maturing

Spiritually – Continuing to grow in grace and knowledge.

Socially – Making friends and being a good testimony.
