As I pondered Holy Week this year I found myself struggling with a mixture of emotions:  Wonder and Disappointment.  Love and Anger.

We usually enter Palm Sunday with joy – focusing on the “Hosanna!  Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”

We lose sight of how these words of praise must have hurt Jesus more than any spike or crown of thorns could have ever pierced Him.

Here is a reality of life:  Not everyone who says they follow Jesus are real Christians.

Here is another one:  Not every Real Christian will act like a real Christian in every situation.

Matthew 7:21 – 23  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’   And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

Mark 14:66 – 71 “And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”   But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed.  And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”  But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”   But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”   And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.”

We need to stand together when standing together is not comfortable

John 12:12 – 13 “The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”

John 12:17 – 19 “The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

John 19:14 – 16a “Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”   So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,  ….”

John 19:25 – 26 “but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

  1. Make sure that those you are standing with are standing for the right reasons
    1. Many are standing only for their own benefit

i.      The crowds yelling hosanna were there because they heard how Jesus could benefit them

  1. Make sure that those you are standing with are Committed
    1. On Palm Sunday the crowds shouted praises to Jesus
    2. On Good Friday they shouted for His death
  2. Make sure that you are standing by FAITH
    1. At the Cross there was very few people of true faith remaining
    2. Very few people walked with real faith in Jesus

i.      Most had ran away

  1. Some as soon as they thought there might be difficulty
  2. Some as soon as they figured out that they may not get what they wanted
  3. Some when they thought it might bring them harm

ii.      Whatever the reason, they fled by sight and did not walk by faith.

Going with the crowd

Peer Pressure

Pride Arrogance

Go with the flow

Step out of your comfort zone

Don’t stand on the worlds bandwagon

It is not made to last forever

It will age

The wheels will fall off

You will be dumped in humanities incinerator
