December 2013

We have just entered the “holiday” season.

The period of time between November 25th – January 3rd is a time when Americans truly shine at their very best!

You know the season I am talking about??

This is the CONSUMPTION season.

This year on “Black Friday” Americans spent over 10 BILLION dollars at our retailers.
QVC sales were up 60% from last year – over 32 Million bucks in one day
Ebay was up 205 from last year

How many of you heard the old standard..”Anyone want more turkey, ham, pie” on thanksgiving?

I was sure wishing that the Aggies had 11 more points!

Yes , this is a time when America really shows its true self! And the Battle cry is MORE!

Sandy Duncan said, “We’ve been raised to compete, to want more! More! More! It’s a way of life. It’s about greed.”

More rebates! More sales! More food! More time off! More football! More – MORE – MORE!!!

Donald Trump teaches us that “The point is that you can’t be too greedy.”

Yes, this is the time of year when we show our greed and our gluttony while we spend our gold…or our Gold Cards!

People were camped out for THREE Days in the Valley to get a few MORE dollars off a TV or Video game..or some other ESSENTIAL need.

People fought and argued over microwaves and toys in the aisle of American stores.

Gimme MORE!

All of this greed and gluttony is openly displayed for all the world to see….many are openly proud of their desire to spend more on their decorations, meals and gifts.

Consumerism – Commercialism gone BESERK!

And all of this greed and gluttony is so warmly embraced and encouraged in a time when we are SUPPOSED to be celebrating Thankfulness and the greatest gift ever given – The Gift of God to His fallen creation of His Son and the salvation He was born to die for!

I think the great philosopher Little Richard had it exactly right when he said “Greed has taken the whole universe, and nobody is worried about their soul.”

Cyclist Lance Armstrong said, “The riskiest thing you can do is get greedy. “

I encourage you to make this holiday season different.

Show the world that we can be better than the stereotypical greedy American.

Lets show them our good side!

Do you want MORE of something this year? Here is a suggestion:
2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” ESV

1. Get more Jesus
a. Worship more
b. Learn more
2. Get more like Jesus
a. Give more
b. Care more
c. Love more
3. Give more glory to Jesus
a. Live for Him and not you
b. Live for others and not yourselves

These three will be our themes for our Christmas Season Message Series. But I hope you will take this season seriously and begin making them the theme of your life.

What do these disasters change?

God is still God

Jesus is still our Savor

Our King still reigns

We remain His children

We remain under His love

We remain loved

He still cares for us

He still loves us

He still is on our side

So…what can we do…if we must do something?

Draw close to God and He will draw clear to you Seek first the Kingdom of God Love God Love others…..even the people who may have caused these disaster…pray for their family…pray for them.    GO…Be ready to serve…much disaster relief work will be needed Give…the right way….give to Sbtc-dr……give to missions……give to Red Cross.

I am reminded of the Words of God that He spoke to His people so many times:  “Do not be afraid, for I am with you”

Haggai 2:3-5 “Does anyone remember this house—this Temple—in its former splendor? How, in comparison, does it look to you now? It must seem like nothing at all! 4 But now the Lord says: Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people still left in the land. And now get to work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 5 My Spirit remains among you, just as I promised when you came out of Egypt. So do not be afraid.’

Do not be afraid.  Be strong.  God is with you.  Now is not the time to cower.  Now is the time to get to work.

Do not be afraid … God

Right now I am sitting in a waiting room, waiting.

I wonder how much of  my life has been spent waiting.

In the Air Force we had to hurry up do wait.

I have waited on doctors, nurses, prescription’s, news, babies, wife and kids, snow, rain, traffic, groceries, repairs, service, politicians, shots, school, growing up, getting old, sleep, food, water, games and the list goes on.

One thing I did not have to wait on was my salvation.  Eternal life had already been paid for and was always available.  Unfortunately, salvation was waiting on me.

Today, as I wait for many earthly things, I also await the return of Jesus Christ.  I do not know if I will wait for Him to come for me individually or if my wait will end in the rapture of His church – or if His method for me really matters.  I am to wait and be ready.

And, while I wait, there is much work to be done; work for me a bad work for others.  Sharing the Gospel and drawing closer to God.  No rest for the waiting, just the blessings of a life lived for the One I am waiting for.

Rise above

Many people say they want to “rise above” the mess of humanity all around them.

We want to get to a “higher Place” or even a “higher plane”

We desire to be above the criticism or higher than the gossip.

Getting better or rising above is a stated goal of many; and worthy of our thought.

I believe that the many, many people who want to “rise above” are not willing todo the hard work of being a better person.

Skyscraper builders seem to always be in a competition to see who can build the tallest building; to be one story higher than their predecessor.  They want to rise above.

The good engineer knows that the hardest parts to design, and the most critical design elements are in the bottom third of the structure; starting with the very soil it is to be built on.

The heaviest loads are placed on the foundation and the lower floors.   The very earth has to be considered, well under the lowest parts of the structure. Intense testing and evaluation must be considered or the whole structure could fail.

A few years ago a multimillion dollar condo development was being constructed on the north part of South Padre Island and this basic concept was somehow flawed by someone.  The building began to lean and crack, sinking into the ground.  While I do not know the entire story or who was at fault, I did drive down there a few times to look at this building from the road, the failure was evident.  Ultimately, the structure was un-repairable and was destroyed by implosion.

If we want to build our life in such a way to reach higher places, achieve great things and to rise above the very expectations of others; we must start below our lowest parts.

A great education, proper moral teaching and decent parenting are all parts of a good foundation; but the part we must begin with is even deeper.

We must first examine the foundations of our faith.  What do we believe in??  How strong is our belief?  Are we easily swayed by what is the popular concepts of the day?  Can our minds be changed by the most recent best seller or motivational video?  How quickly do we bow to peer pressure, financial pressure or even family pressures?

Whatever you strongly believe in will define who you are and what kind of person you are and will become.

If you have no strong faith in anything you will be moved to and fro by whatever you are exposed to at the moment.  No security, no core values and no security.

A person of strong faith and convictions will always be secure on those beliefs and remain steadfast in them regardless of the situation of life.  They may be thought of as judgmental, rude, rockheaded or intolerant by the world around them, but they will always know what they believe in and follow their faith.

If you are going to live a life of true faith, all the way down to the very depths of your foundation, you had better make sure that what your faith in is both true and unchanging.

John 14:1-6 Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.  There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready,I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.  And you know the way to where I am going.”   “No, we don’t know, Lord,”Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”  NLT

Truth is not a concept, an ideal or a dictionary definition.  Truth is a Person.  Jesus is Truth.

Truth will never change.  Truth is eternal.  Truth is not a theory.  Truth is forever and stands the test of time –even thousands of years.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”  NLT

The Truth that is Jesus Christ is eternal. While there has been much evidence to support who Jesus is and what He has done; there has been no evidence to deny Him.  There have been theories and bold proclamations, most of which have been proven wrong, but no proof.

Truth perseveres

Matthew 7:24-27 Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

It is time to stop getting beat up by this every changing world and believe in Someone who is solid, who will always be there for you and would never leave you or forsake you.

It is time for Jesus.

John 3:16 For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”  NLT

Romans 3:22-26 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.  For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin.People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding His blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when He held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for He was looking ahead and including them in what He would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate His righteousness, for He himself is fair and just, and He declares sinners to be right in His sight when they believe in Jesus.

Jesus is Someone we can believe in and build a strong life foundation upon so we can reach the higher life we so desperately desire.
